Itinerary

Day 1 Mon, May 23 - Depart USA for Turkey

Day 2 Tues, May 24 - Arrival Istanbul, Tarsus
Our guide will meet the group at the airport to transfer us to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 Wed, May 25 - Tarsus, Cappadocia
Depart after breakfast to visit the city of Tarsus, one of the great educational centers of the Empire and Paul’s hometown. While here we will learn how Paul’s unique multi-cultural background — as a Roman citizen in a Hellenistic city and later Jewish rabbi — would equip him to become Jesus’ great apostle to the Gentiles. There are lessons for us as well as we seek to communicate Christ cross-culturally in our world. We will continue to Cappadocia for visit, dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 4 Thur, May 26 - Cappadocia
Full day visit to Cappadocia, famous for its stunning landscape, underground cities, churches, and three fourth century church fathers who did much to advance a philosophical understanding of the Trinity. Cappadocians were present in Jerusalem during Pentecost (Acts 2:9) and were later addressed in 1 Peter (1:1). Here we will talk about Paul’s journey to Damascus and his encounter with the risen Jesus. It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Jesus’ resurrection and exaltation on Paul’s thinking. Especially important was his early conviction that Jesus was, however mysteriously, to be identified with God (and hence the later doctrine of the Trinity). Everything Paul subsequently did or wrote was forever transformed by this moment. Our aim here is to walk through what Paul himself might have felt and thought. Not only will we understand how this experience totally changed his outlook, but hopefully we too will share in that transformation. Dinner overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 5 Fri, May 27 - Cappadocia , IZMIR
During our morning drive to Ankara we will talk about Paul’s initial involvement with the early Christian movement, his rise to prominence as its chief missionary to the Gentiles, and an example of his preaching to Hellenistic Jews (Acts 13). From Ankara we will catch a flight to Izmir for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 Sat, May 28 - IZMIR, EPHESUS (Ephesians, Colossians)
Morning drive to visit Ephesus, home to recipients of the letter that bears their name. Although for obvious historical reasons Romans has long been regarded by Protestants as the heart of Paul’s theology, that honor really belongs to Ephesians. It seems appropriate that while sitting in what was the cultural center of the Roman Empire, we will look at Paul’s understanding of Jesus as the centre of God’s plan for a united and reconciled humanity (Ephesians/Colossians).  By the end of the first century, Ephesus was the center of Christianity, but not before some serious issues emerged with its leadership (1 Timothy). We’ll say something about this when, after a visit to the house of the Virgin Mary, we will see the Basilica of St. John.  Return to Izmir for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 Sun, May 29 - IZMIR , ALEXANDROUPOLIS (Philemon).
Morning transfer to Izmir airport for flight to Istanbul and then cross the borders, enter to Greece, arrive to Alexandroupolis, Greece for dinner and overnight. During our trip, we will take a brief look at Philemon, the shortest of Paul’s letters, but without whose practical outcomes, the soaring theology of Ephesians and Romans would be mere theory.

Day 8 Mon, May 30 - ALEXANDROUPOLIS, PHILIPPI, THESSALONIKI (Philippians and 1 and 2 Thessalonians)
Following breakfast we will travel to Philippi, a Roman colony and a leading city in Macedonia. Of all Paul’s converts, the Philippians were his most constant comfort and support. Written in the ancient style of a friendship letter, we will discover how Paul’s reflections on Jesus led him radically to recast ancient notions of friendship and thereby of Christian interpersonal relationships both for them and for us. We will continue on to Thessaloniki, home of the fledgling community of Christians which received what are perhaps the earliest documents in the NT. Often overlooked, they are critical in helping us see for the first time the practical outworkings of the gospel in Europe and some of the questions it raised. Dinner overnight Thessaloniki.

Day 9 Tues, May 31 - THESSALONIKI, BERA, METEORA , KALAMBAKA
Visit Bera, Meteora monasteries, dinner and overnight Kalambaka. Our visit to these Greek Orthodox centers will provide the ideal backdrop to discuss, through the lens of Pauline thought, some of the historical issues that characterize and distinguish Western and Orthodox Christianity.

Day 10 Wed June 1 - KALAMBAKA , ATHENS
We continue to Athens, for dinner and overnight Athens.

Day 11 Thur, June 2 - ATHENS (Acts 17)
Standing on Mars Hill in the shadow of the Parthenon, it is easy to imagine ourselves among the philosophers as they tried to make sense of Paul’s message. In many respects this sermon is a model of cross-cultural communication and evangelism, and its location overlooking the Athenian Agora provides the perfect setting for exploring its implications for today. But even more relevant, in our Post-Modern world, is the way in which Paul anchors human truth not in abstract philosophy or science but, in a remarkable anticipation of our times, in human experience. In this case, the particular historical experience of Jesus’ resurrection. This will be a truly exciting exploration into the nature of the gospel. Later we will visit the Parthenon and the Agora. The afternoon will be free to explore Athens, its museums, shopping in the Plaka, or just to rest.  Dinner and overnight in Athens.

Day 12 Fri, June 3 - ATHENS, CORINTH, OVERNIGHT FERRY RIDE TO BARI, ITALY
After breakfast the group will drive to ancient Corinth, also a Roman colony, and the most beautiful, liveliest, and newest city of first century Roman Greece. Paul’s two letters to the Corinthian believers stand apart from the rest of his writings. 1 Corinthians, being almost entirely concerned with practical wisdom as to how Christians ought to live, rightly puts the emphasis where it ought to be: on the importance of the Christian life before a watching world devoted to wisdom, power, and influence. 2 Corinthians, with its long explanation of the low-key, even unimpressive, nature of Paul’s apostleship, teases out the implications of Jesus’ life and death for Paul’s and for our manner of life. In these truly counter-cultural letters, Paul reminds us all that with Christ everything changed. We will see the kinds of shops where Paul might have worked his trade, the Doric style Temple of Apollo (which the Imperial Temple was deliberately designed to overshadow), the market place, museum, the Fountain of Pirene, the Agora and the Bema. Drive to Patras Port and depart by overnight Ferry to Bari.

Day 13 Sat, June 4 - BARA, ITALY, ROME
We arrive in Bari in the  morning. Our deluxe motor coach will take us to Pompeii for a short visit before we continue to Rome. Check in at our Hotel. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 14 Sun, June 5 - ROME (Romans [Galatians] and 2 Timothy)
Although the centre of the Roman universe and home to one of the earliest Christian communities, Paul’s primary interest in writing was to win their support for his planned mission to Spain. Unfortunately, the mission never took place. But the church was blessed with a brilliant explanation of how it is that we all, whether Jews or not, can become God’s friends. not through what the Torah demanded but by trusting Jesus. It is also from here that Paul pens his last letter, to his young co-worker Timothy. As in life so in death, Paul’s primary concern is one of encouragement to hold fast to the only thing that will truly stand the test of time: the resurrected Jesus. It is a powerful testimony to Paul’s gospel that with the Imperial palaces long ruined, Rome is now known for its churches. The group will tour the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel the celebrated Chapel of the Popes and the venue of the Conclaves for Papal elections. It is one of the most splendid masterpieces in the history of world art and is well known around the world for its magnificent ceiling, beautifully decorated by Michelangelo. From here, your next visit will be to the Basilica of St. Peter, the largest church in the world, which  overlooks the enormous Piazza San Pietro.  into the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 15 Mon, June 6 - DEPART FOR THE USA
